We believe education is not schooling. According to Mark K Smith education is the wise, hopeful and respectful cultivation of learning undertaken in the belief that all should have the chance to share in life.

 

The answer to the question ‘what is education?’ given here can apply to both those ‘informal’ forms that are driven and rooted in conversation – and to more formal approaches based in curriculum. The choice is not between what is ‘good’ and what is ‘bad’ – but rather what is appropriate for people in this situation or that. There are times to use transmission and direct teaching as methods, and moments for exploration, experience and action. It is all about getting the mix right, and framing it within the guiding leading idea and disposition of education.
